Lapidarium storico

Ground Floor

This room contains architectural elements, tomb inscriptions and sculptural decorations dating from the eleventh century to the sixteenth. These include fragments of the baptismal font and the chancel enclosure of the Baptistery which are masterpieces of the geometrical lattice-work carving typical of thirteenth-century Florence. These pieces were dispersed in 1577 when the mediaeval font was dismantled to make way for the structure created for the baptism of the son of the Grand Duke Francesco I, Prince Filippo de’ Medici.
