- Frammento di capitello della lanterna della cupola della Cattedrale
Large marble fragment of one of the capitals of the semi-columns flanking the windows of the dome lantern. The fragment may have been removed during 19th-century restoration works on the Duomo, but could also be a part detached by the lightning storm of 26-27 January 160a, which seriously damaged the lantern.
The capital is decorated at the base with small leaves with smoothly-rounded edges. A second wreath of elongated leaves with a large central rib reaches as far as the abacus. The abacus has a central molding with ovules, darts, stylized leaves and “spindle” beads. Scholars attribute the design of these capitals to Michelozzo, who from 1446 to 1451 was responsible for the construction of the lantern. In fact, in the wooden model of the lantern kept in the Museum and attributed to Brunelleschi, the capitals of the lantern windows are in Tuscan style.
