Lapide tombale Pilli

In this room are a series of sepulchral burial stones in marble and other stone types, dating from the 14th to the 18th century, most of which originally came from the historic cemetery once located in front of the Cathedral. Many of them were removed in the 19th century during construction of the new cathedral facade. Each tombstone, rectangular in shape, bears the family name of the corresponding burials, engraved in Gothic or Roman characters, and in some cases the coat of arms. An important cemetery area in fact occupied the space in front of the façade and the southern side of the Cathedral and many of these gravestones fixed to the external walls or to the steps of the Cathedral and the Bell Tower indicated the position of the burials
