Lunetta con San Zanobi e angeli

Lunette in painted and glazed terracotta, by Andrea della Robbia, from 1496, depicting, with white figures in relief on cobalt background, the patron saint of the archdiocese of Florence between two angels in prayer.

The Della Robbia technique imitated the brightness and durability of precious stones, using inexpensive, light and easily workable materials. The figures are rendered with naturalism, while the colours allude to an otherworldly dimension: Zenobius seems to look out from Paradise through an open window, ready to bless those passing below.

The lunette decorated the entrance door of the Brotherhood of St. Zenobius, which was located in rooms opposite the bell tower. The lunette survived the abolition of the brotherhood in the 18th century, but at the end of the 19th century the face of the saint was lost. The gap was filled by replacements, made first by Giovanni Dupré, then by the famous Ginori manufacturers. Finally, the original fragment of the face was reinstated, after it was found in the holdings of a Florentine antique dealer.
