Cazzuola da cerimonia
Vassoio da calcina e cazzuola

Tools in fine materials and finishes which had been used by Victor Emmanuel II to lay the cornerstone of the new façade for the Cathedral on April 22nd, 1860.  Despite the ceremony being purely symbolic (the final project had yet to be selected) as testified by the shapes and refined finishes of the tools, such as the gilded trowel or the stretcher with its wooden carved handle, it took place with the utmost solemnity, attended by Camillo Cavour, Bettino Ricasoli and leading civic authorities. The tools were donated to the Opera del Duomo by the Italian royal family at the end of 1860 and are well-preserved despite the damage caused by the flood of 1966.
