Lunette depicting the Founders of Florence’s charitable institutes. Oil painting by Cassioli (1879), temporarily displayed on the new facade of the Cathedral. Knowing that he had to unveil the left side of the Cathedral’s façade at the end of 1879, that summer Emilio De Fabris considered how he could make the work look as complete as possible when he presented it to the public. Since there was no time to realize the mosaic lunette depicting the founders of the Florentine charitable institutes planned for the left doors, he first approached Annibale Gatti and Luigi Mussini to paint a temporary fresco and when they refused he then asked Amos Cassioli. The artist accepted the commission, and painted a lunette showing the founders of Florence’s charitable institutes in medieval dress against a luminous golden background. This temporary work was then replaced by a mosaic designed by Niccolò Barabino in 1886.
