Rooms of the Museum
Belvedere del Paradiso/Foreste del Casentino
First FloorFrom this room you can enjoy a magnificent view of the Paradise room. Also present are the ancient units of measurement such as the Florentine braccio (arm) which corresponds to 58.32 cm, bronze measures and hammers used for marking the timber. They recall a parallel activity of the Opera del Duomo, namely the management of a huge tract of forest in the Casentino, an area to the east of the city, assigned in 1380 by the government of Florence to the Opera so as to assure the cathedral under construction of a regular supply of timber as well as a source of income through the trade of timber. The fir trees were floated down the Arno to Florence where they were stored in a warehouse on the site now occupied by the Museo dell’Opera.
