- Paliotto di Odoardo Farnese
Antependium of Odoardo Farnese, in satin embroidered in silver and gold, with painted fabric panels. Made in Rome to a design by Annibale Carracci in the early 17th century. The antependium, or panel of fabric used to decorate the front of the altar, was part of the set of vestments, including the chasuble, made for Cardinal Odoardo Farnese, which he donated to the hermitage of Camaldoli to adorn the cell dedicated to Saint Mary Magdalene he had built. A magnificent donation testifying to the link between the Farnese family, protectors of the Hermitage, and the community of monks founded by Saint Romuald. The cardinal’s coat of arms, a cardinal’s hat over six fleur-de-lys, is embroidered on the center of the antependium, surrounded by heraldic symbols and the motto of Cardinals Alessandro Farnese and Odoardo Farnese, together with medallions depicting the Virgin, Saints Peter and Paul, King David and King Solomon.
