- Pace con immagine della PietÃ
Osculatory in chased silver, by Florentine craftsmen of the 17th century. In the past osculatories were used during Mass as part of the rite of peace. They were kissed by both the celebrant and the congregation as a sign of peace and brotherhood before communion. This Osculatory is shaped as a tablet, complete with a handle, and has a cover depicting the Pietà: the Madonna holding the lifeless body of Christ in her arms. Osculatories frequently depict the theme of Christ's Passion and His sufferings before his death on the cross. The motif of scrolls and leaves decorating the frame of the osculatory reflect the Baroque tastes of the 17th century.
