Pair of carved wooden 17th-century liturgical stools, painted and gilded, inspired by the art of Giovanni Battista Foggini. The stools are part of the furnishings, together with altars and benches, used in churches for liturgical functions. The stools would have been placed in the presbytery, close to the altar used for the celebration of Mass. Here the celebrant’s chair is flanked by the stools of those, deacons and so forth, who assisted him, i.e. the deacons. The stools we see here are decorated with representations of cherubs, or angels, who according to Christian tradition are part of the angelic hosts and are represented by a face surrounded by two pairs of wings.
