A Museum inside of a Museum in the heart of Florence
October 29th reopens one of the most sacred and ample art collections to the world: the new Opera Duomo Museum.
With just over two months left until the opening of this big project and new challenge for the never ending construction site of the Opera of Santa Maria del Fiore. An enormous investment, not only economic, but also a cultural and artistic investment for the city of Florence which is an unprecedented place that at the same time sets out to be a fascinating place for its visitors.
On October 29th, 2015 the doors with the greatest concentration of Florentine monumental sculpture will open to the world: Medieval and Renaissance statues and reliefs made in marble, bronze and silver by the greatest artist of that time. Masterpieces, which in most cases were created for the interiors and exteriors of the ecclesiastical buildings that are present still today in front of the Museum like Saint John’s Baptistery, the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, and Giotto’s Bell Tower. The unique mission of the Opera del Duomo Museum is in fact presenting the artworks that were created for these buildings in an adequate way that when put together make up what today is called Il Grande Museo del Duomo.
A real and true Museum inside of a Museum, a repository of faith, art and history that is unmatched in the world because embedded in it are the roots of western culture. With a surface of about 6,000 square meters gathered in 25 rooms and divided onto three floors. It is set up in a spectacular way, where you are able to value the unique masterpieces in the world that for the first time are presented in a way that gives a true sense for which they were created.
