The New Catalogue of the Opera del Duomo Museum
A systematic analysis of the artistic heritage in four volumes
Opera di Santa Maria del Fiore announces the publication of the new General Scientific Catalogue of the Museo dell’Opera del Duomo (Mandragora, 2026), edited by Timothy Verdon and Rita Filardi. This monumental project represents the first official scientific catalogue in the Museum's history since its inauguration in 1891, arriving fifty-seven years after the last reference work of 1969-1970.
A Work of International Standing The publication is the result of a multi-year commitment involving a team of eminent international scholars. The catalogue offers an updated critical overview of the complex's artistic heritage, integrating new attributions and scientific reconsiderations that establish it as an essential and exhaustive point of reference.
The work is divided into four volumes in a bilingual edition (Italian and English), enhanced by a dedicated photographic campaign by Antonio Quattrone.
Structure and Scientific Content
The volumes trace seven centuries of art history:
- Volume I: Traces the history of the Museum, the Opera, and the building, including archaeological finds and the sculptural program of the medieval facade.
- Volume II: Focuses on 13th-15th century painting and the figures of Donatello and Filippo Brunelleschi.
- Volume III: Examines the works of Luca della Robbia, the doors by Lorenzo Ghiberti, sacred goldsmithing, and the Museum's textile collection.
- Volume IV: Documents the Grand Ducal period (16th-19th century), with particular attention to Michelangelo’s Pietà, portraiture, and historical projects for the Cathedral facade.
The catalogue will be officially presented on May 11, 2026.
