The Opera di Santa Maria del Fiore has donated a 1: 1 scale photographic reproduction of the Gates of Paradise by Lorenzo Ghiberti (1425-52) on the occasion of the exhibition "I Am Dostoevsky"
“I Am Dostoevsky” is the title of the exhibition that will be held until February 14, 2022 at the Mikhailovsky Castle in St. Petersburg to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the writer's birth (Moscow, November 11, 1821). The Opera di Santa Maria del Fiore joined the initiative by donating a 1: 1 scale photographic reproduction (now in one of the exhibition rooms) of the Gates of Paradise by Lorenzo Ghiberti (1425-52), created for the Florentine Baptistery of San Giovanni and now kept in the Opera del Duomo Museum.
Dostoevsky was a great lover of art; he did not miss a single exhibition in St. Petersburg and visited the main museums and galleries of Europe. There were two times in which he visited Florence and the admiration aroused by the majestic door of Ghiberti was such that he decided to ask for a photographic reproduction in 1:1 scale.
The exhibition at Mikhailovsky Castle, where the writer spent five years of his life (from 1838 to 1843), is the setting in which his image of an “ideal museum” is materialized. With the aim of delving into Dostoevsky's imagination, the exhibition aims to make his creative and spiritual life visible through objects, reproductions of works of art that he had seen and known well and with paintings related to the world in which he lived.
We are delighted to pay tribute to the great Russian writer through this interesting initiative!
