- Mosaico San Zanobi vescovo benedicente
Mosaic portraying Saint Zenobius, half length, in the act of blessing. Executed between 1504 and 1505 by Monte di Giovanni in preparation for the embellishment of the Cathedral’s chapel, where the saint’s remains are preserved. In 1491 Lorenzo il Magnifico had planned to decorate the Saint Zenobius’ chapel, in the central tribune of the Cathedral, with mosaics. The project was then taken up by the Opera del Duomo which held a competition to decide who should receive the commission for the project. This small mosaic is the sample submitted by the winner Monte di Giovanni and depicts Saint Zenobius in the act of blessing, wearing a bishop’s liturgical attire: miter, headgear, cope, robe and crosier. In the background is a walled Florence dominated by Brunelleschi’s Cupola and Giotto’s Campanile. Despite the mosaic’s success the chapel was never decorated.
