Marble relief of Madonna and Child by Pagno di Lapo Portigiani, one of Donatello’s followers, dating back to the first half of the 15th century and created for one of the rooms of the Opera del Duomo. This sculpture was probably part of a relief that Vasari says Pagno di Lapo Portigiani created for the Opera del Duomo. The relief focuses on the intimate, human side of Mary and Jesus’ relationship, a common theme in Florentine Renaissance art, with the subjects’ clothing, pose and gestures all rendering the divine more cozily familiar. The fruit Jesus is holding is almost certainly a pomegranate, both a symbol of charity with its densely-packed seeds and a reminder of Christ’s sacrifice on the Cross with its seeds as red as blood.
