Partially painted wooden architects’ models made between the mid-15th century and the first quarter of the 16th century by Florentine architects illustrating the various proposals put forward to complete the decoration of the drum of Brunelleschi’s dome. When Brunelleschi died in 1446, the drum of the dome still had to be clad in marble, as can be seen in a detail of Domenico di Michelino’s 1465 painting “Dante and his Poem”. The models on display here represent ideas put forward over a number of years by several different architects to complete the marble cladding and decorations around the oculus and along the cornice that joins the drum to the dome. Initial models in a spirit similar to that of Brunelleschi were proposed by Antonio Manetti Ciaccheri (1451-1460 and 1459-1460) and were later followed by ideas from Andrea Sansovino (1507), Antonio da Sangallo il Vecchio (1507-1516), and Simone del Pollaiolo, nicknamed Il Cronaca, (1507-1512) in a polished decorative style. Michelangelo Buonarroti put forward a very different proposal in the first quarter of the 16th century, his project was in a much plainer style, without a gallery, and with a jutting cornice.
