Architect’s model of the dome and two tribunes in carved wood, attributed to Filippo Brunelleschi 1420-1436. Long believed to have been an assembly of different models, this architect’s model of the dome and apse of the cathedral is now regarded as a single unit, designed and made as we see it today. Some of the details, such as the corner pillars and the diameter of the oculi, smaller than in reality, indicate that Filippo Brunelleschi made the model to study the overall impact of various architectural volumes, without worrying too much about the decorative details he intended to define at a later stage.
