Twelve small white marble statues, depicting eleven apostles and an announced Virgin Mary or an angel (replacing a twelfth apostle today in Ferrara), come from the pinnacles of the Cathedral windows. They are the work of several Florentine sculptors of the second half of the fourteenth century, including Francesco di Neri Ubaldi known as "il Sellaio", Simone Talenti and others and were originally sculpted in two phases between 1362 and 1390 to decorate the niches in the portal releases larger than the medieval facade. Just like the façade, full of statues and reliefs, during the 14th and 15th centuries the side doors and windows were also enriched, in the cymatiums, in the tympanums and on the pinnacles, with groups of statues and high reliefs.
