Small marble statues of prophets and apostles from the pinnacles of the Cathedral windows, attributed to Florentine Masters from the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. Just as the façade was lavishly decorated with statues and reliefs, so the cymas and pinnacles of the windows and side doors were also adorned with groups do statues and high reliefs. The decorative use of sculpture in the Christian tradition of religious art alludes to faith in the incarnation of God in human form, born as man to the Virgin Mary. In the iconographic decoration of the Cathedral itself, dedicated to the cult of Our Lady, the Apostles are the “living stones” in a church in which Mary is a mystical figure.
