Panel, from the mid-14th-century Florentine school, depicting the Madonna and Child with Saint John the Baptist and Saint Blaise. This painting, in the 15th century was known as "Madonna of the milk", because of the subject which shows her breastfeeding the Child, and as "Our Lady of the Font", thanks to its location on an altar near the holy water font in the Cathedral. TThe faithful also gave her the nickname "Madonna of the thunder" due to some miracles attributed to her. In the Cathedral she was celebrated on August 5th, for the feast of the "Madonna of the snow". The panel was moved to one of the less central left-hand tribune chapels in the mid-17th century to accommodate the large numbers of people who used to pray before it and was ultimately moved to the Opera del Duomo storehouse in 1840. The style is both lavish and tender, the majesty of the Virgin tempered by her maternal expression. Saint John the Baptist, patron saint of Florence and Saint Blaise, Armenian bishop and martyr who lived between the 3rd and 4th centuries, stand on either side of the throne.
