Fragments of marble carved or decorated with mosaics, found under the floor of the Cathedral and belonging to the ancient facade of the Cathedral, begun by Arnolfo, and demolished in 1587. During the dismantling of the unfinished facade, much of the wall decoration was lost; in this room the few surviving fragments are exhibited. Some of them refer to the facade of Arnolfo di Cambio, while others belong to a later phase, when in the mid-fourteenth century the construction of the Duomo was directed by Francesco Talenti. The mosaic-decorated parts refer to Arnolfo, who used sculptors called from Rome, a city where the mosaic tradition was rooted. Among the fragments there are jambs, pieces of columns, cornices and tiles, which marked the facade, dividing the spaces decorated with statues. Some of them are figurative, such as the one in which the head of a putto appears in bas-relief.
