Tomb of Filippo Brunelleschi, with slab in pietra serena
The tomb slab bears an inscription from the biography of the architect, by Manetti, his great friend: “Corpo dell’uomo di grande ingegno Filippo di ser Brunelleschi fiorentino” [Body of the man of great ingenuity, Filippo di ser Brunelleschi Fiorentino.] Filippo Brunelleschi, the brilliant author of the cathedral dome and a father of the Renaissance, died in Florence on 15th April 1446. His body was first temporarily placed in a niche in Giotto's Bell Tower, but on 30th December 1446 it was moved inside the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore. Here, the architect was buried under a white marble slab, while a funeral monument sculpted by Buggiano was placed on a wall. Centuries after its record was lost, the tomb of the Florentine master was rediscovered in 1972, during archaeological excavations carried out under the Cathedral.
