Lastra tombale di messer Seruchero di Matteo canonico

This slab from an earthen burial was found during archaeological excavations at the ancient basilica of Santa Reparata in 1965-1973 at the level of the 13th-14th century flooring.

It is a rectangular slab, in white marble, with an antique black marble frame. The prelate is portrayed in bas-relief, while around the perimeter there is an inscription in engraved Gothic capitals, which identifies him as Messer Seruchero di Matteo, a Florentine and Pisan canon, who died on 20 June 1363.

The deceased is depicted as asleep, with his head on an elegant embroidered cushion and with his hands folded, in a cataletto framed by an arch, above which two family coats of arms stand out: crenellated St. Andrew's cross.

Messer Seruchero is in deacon clothes, with gloves and a cope richly decorated with a cross and a veil on his head. His face is portrayed with a certain truth, just turned on one side.
